September 29 Groundbreaking Celebration for Habitat for Humanity ‘Gateway Gathering Space’

Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts) is proud to invite the public to a groundbreaking celebration for the Habitat for Humanity Gateway Gathering Space, a new public artwork designed by artist Greg Mueller. This sculptural installation – part of a $500,000 public art initiative funded by the City of Muncie through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) – will create a welcoming and reflective space for neighbors and families at the intersection of W. 8th Street and S. Hoyt Avenue.

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place Monday, September 29 at 4:00 p.m. at Greater Muncie Habitat for Humanity, 1420 S. Hoyt Ave., and will include remarks from Mayor Dan Ridenour, MuncieArts Executive Director Tania Said, and Habitat for Humanity CEO Lindsey Arthur. Community members are encouraged to attend this brief but meaningful event.

“Public art is a cornerstone of quality of life,” said Mayor Dan Ridenour. “By investing in gathering places like this, we’re strengthening our neighborhoods, our connections, and our commitment to Muncie’s continued growth.”

The Gateway Gathering Space is one of four major new public artworks launching across Muncie in 2025 and 2026. Each project was selected through a community-driven process, with input from local partners and residents to ensure the work reflects neighborhood values and needs.

“This project embodies our mission at MuncieArts—to support creative placemaking that brings people together and celebrates our city’s unique character,” said Tania Said. “We are especially grateful to Greg Mueller for his thoughtful design, and to Habitat for Humanity for their deep partnership throughout this process.”

Lindsey Arthur, CEO of Habitat for Humanity, emphasized the significance of the location and collaboration: “As an organization committed to building homes, communities, and hope, we are proud to be a part of this transformative project. We’re grateful for the trust placed in us and look forward to watching this space come to life.”

The project will be installed in phases beginning in late 2025, with a formal unveiling planned in 2026.
