2021 Mayor's Arts Award Nominee: Rick Zeigler

Why are the arts important in Muncie? What do the arts do for the community?

The arts are important for our community as a way to pull people out of their normal frame of reference and make unique connections both locally and to the larger culture. In this way they both strengthen and expand community ties.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a person with a passionate interest in and devotion to music and to exposing people to music they may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience.

How did you become interested in the arts?

I became interested in the arts/music at a very young age, enticed by the Beatles and the music of the sixties. Two memorable events that cemented my interest were seeing Jimi Hendrix (in Muncie!) and the 1972 edition of the Rolling Stones. However, out of the hundreds of concerts I have experienced, pride of place goes to Bob Marley.

If you could change one thing about the arts in Muncie, what would it be?

If I could change one thing about the arts in Muncie it would be creating some way to expose more people from all walks of life to them. The Muncie Three Trails Music Series is one (not altogether successful) attempt to bring this about.
