Application & Admissions Process

All applications are reviewed by a rotating admissions committee. Finalists selected by the admissions committee will be contacted to complete interviews and reference checks. Accepted applicants will be offered a residency based on the preferences indicated in their application. The admissions committee will try to match residents with their desired residency types and timelines, though there are a limited number of residency spaces available.

Deadlines

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Applications received between January 1 and June 30 will be reviewed on or after July 1 and notified by September 1 of application decisions and upcoming available residency spaces.

Applications received between July 1 and December 31 will be reviewed on or after January 1 and notified by March 1 of application decisions and upcoming available residency spaces.

What do I need to submit?

  • 2-4 week residencies for any discipline with a limited community requirement.Includes a $500 stipend.

  • 4-8 week residencies for any discipline that would like to work with the community on a special project.Includes a $1000 stipend.

  • 8-12 week residency in Fine Art, Dance, and Theatre that works with the community as well as Ball State University. Includes a $1500+ stipend plus $1000+ toward their proposed project with BSU students and community members.

Application Requirement DETAILS

One PDF Document containing the following items. Please follow the checklist above for each residency type.

  1. Artist statement: 250-500 word statement about work, practice, and motivation.

  2. Artist C.V. or Resume

  3. Professional References: Names and contact information for two professional references.

  4. Anticipated Length of Stay or Desired Timeline: Residents may stay between 2 and 12 weeks during any single term, depending on the residency type. Learn more about the residency types here!
    Please indicate your desired length of stay and any specific arrival or departure dates, if necessary.

    Example: I would like to stay for 10 weeks of the summer term, starting on June 22.

  5. Personal Project Proposal (up to one page) that outlines:

    • The personal or collective project you want to work on while at PlySpace;

    • What facilities, equipment, or other resources are necessary to complete your objective?

  6. Community Collaborative Project Proposal (up to one page) that includes the project you would like to complete in collaboration with a community partner. If the content of the personal and collaborative projects overlap, applicants may develop a single proposal that outlines both projects.

    • PlySpace Studio Residency applicants do not need to submit a community proposal.

    • PlySpace Community Residency and Fellowship applicants must submit BOTH a Personal and Community Project Proposal.

    • Please do not reach out to any potential community partner prior to or during the application process. It is much easier for us to help make that connection with you once we get to know your project!

    • What would your community collaboration entail? Why are you interested in this project / collaboration?

    • How much time will you need to spend on your collaboration in order for it to be successful?

    • What facilities, equipment, or other resources are necessary to complete your community collaboration?

7. Image/File List (one page) Please add one page to the pdf document that has the image details or video details, numbered in the same order as the uploaded files or with thumbnails of the image each description refers to (i.e. image 1, untitled, acrylic on paper, 24” x 36”).

  • Videos and audio files should be accompanied by url links where the video / audio can be viewed.

  • Writing submissions should list the writing samples, date of sample, and a brief (1 paragraph or less) synopsis of the sample (what is it?).

Portfolio

A single PDF document of portfolio images, media files, or writing samples uploaded with the application documents to the submission website.

The portfolio should be compiled as a single PDF Document prior to uploading.

The portfolio should include:

10 images of work or 3 video/media projects or documents or 3 writing samples from the last 5 years.
Work should reflect the type of work that will be pursued during the residency.

If your portfolio is made up of different types of work, video, images, and writing, just mix and match up to 10 items and put your best foot forward.
