FURY // Directed by PlySpace Resident Fellow Derek Spencer

PlySpace, the artist in residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council (MuncieArts) in collaboration with the Ball State Department of Theatre and Dance, presents FURY, an experimental theatrical performance directed by Resident Fellow Derek Spencer.

While at PlySpace, Derek has been working with acting students from Ball State University’s Department of Theater and Dance, led by teaching professor Veronica Santoyo, to create a devised adaptation of The Eumenides by Aeschylus as his community collaborative project. FURY adapts the classic Greek tragedy for a contemporary context. Spencer and his ensemble draw on physical theater, immersive performance techniques, and improvisation to examine the role of anger in judicial reform. As Athena gathers her jury for the first ever trial, the Furies, ancient gods of anger, eagerly await the execution of Orestes, accused of murdering his mother. All involved in this legal milestone may soon find that the truth is more complicated than a simple verdict of "innocent" or "guilty".

Originally devised with the ensemble and performed in an ornate Masonic temple, FURY asks audiences to examine their own relationship to justice, reform, and authority. Audiences may be directly interacted with in this site-specific, immersive performance.

The premiere of FURY will receive a four night run at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The opening night will be Thursday, April 21, 2022, followed by performances on Friday, April 22, 2022 and Saturday, April 23, 2022. The final performance will be on Sunday, April 24, 2022.
