Kegs! Casts! and Kraut!

  • Madjax 514 East Jackson Street Muncie, IN, 47305 United States (map)

Join PlySpace Resident Fellow, Dave Rowe, for an afternoon of aluminum casting demonstrations, with beer and bratwurst, at Madjax!

Dave will demonstrate the aluminum casting process using his custom foundry, built during his time at the PlySpace residency this summer.  The demonstration will be held at the Madjax outdoor patio adjacent to Guardian Brewery on Saturday, July 14th. The event will begin at 2:00 PM, with aluminum pours on the hour at 3:00, 4:00, and 5:00.  This demonstration event is free and open to the public. For an additional fee of $10, or for free with a Muncie Arts and Culture Council membership, interested audience members can make a small shape in clay which will be cast during the demonstration. All supplies will be provided, and participation is first-come-first-serve, with a limit of one casting per person until supplies run out.  A selection of beer will be available through Guardian Brewery, and Bratwurst will be available for purchase from Tastes Good on a Bun ($4 a Brat!).

About the project:
While in residence at PlySpace, Dave has created a small metal foundry which can be used by the community through demonstrations and workshops. Throughout his time at PlySpace he has demonstrated the foundry and provided hands-on activities for a variety of audiences at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts, Upward Bound, and the Ross Community Center.  Dave views a casting foundry as an empowering tool which is often only available to community members with special training or academic privilege. With the proliferation of easy to build plans available online, foundry work has moved from a difficult and dangerous industrial task to something easily accessible to anyone with a propane tank, scrap metal, and time. Using common, available materials, Dave has created a small foundry which can quickly melt aluminum to be poured into handmade sand molds. The foundry casting process not only teaches important lessons in three-dimensional object design and fabrication but also recalls the early manufacturing history and legacy in Muncie.
